Non-Residents as Named Driver on Car Insurance Policy

Hi

I am having some issues getting my father insured. Quick history...

My father is a US citizen and was insured as a named driver on my grandfather's car insurance. He had been since he was a UK resident so there was no issue with his non-residency.

My grandfather passed away recently leaving the car with no insurance cover.

Now we are struggling to find a way to insure the car.

My suggestion was to insure it in my name with him as an additional driver but I cannot find any insurance company that will accept a non-UK resident as a named driver.

Does anyone know if any insurance companies that will provide this service? Or if there is any better way of going about insuring this car that will allow my father to drive it

Many thanks

If you do a search on Google for 'car insurance for non residents' you will get several hits with information of companies that people have found previously will add a non resident namd driver.

You could ask these companies if they wil do it.

One thread did say you need to phone them as the online systems won't cater for it.

I did this search and all that comes up are temporary car insurance sites. I am not interested in temporary car insurance. I need standard car insurance that allows my non-resident father to be a named driver on my policy

Why should it be a problem? My insurance company doesn't even ask and I've never thought to tell them.

Is he going to be the main driver of the car, if he is then he must be insured as such and not as a named driver.

He will not be the main driver, I will be. However, he comes over 4 or 5 times a year and needs to use the car when he is here

Have you tried the previous insurer?

Same situation with my partner named on my car. Hiscox covers this though he is non-resident.

(Though this is with a license from an interchangeable country. Not sure where the U.S. stands. Its license is pretty useless everywhere - having originally had a U.S. license, I eventually took a test elsewhere so as to be able to exchange licenses as usual when moving countries.)
