Toilet causing an earthquake in the house!

This has happened a fair number of times and my mother had got a plumber to fix the problem... for a brief time, if any. Now it returns and haunts the house... THE MYSTERIOUS FOGHORN (ridiculously loud)... I feel bad when I use the toilet at night as the entire family members wake up and I can sometimes hear footsteps coming down the stairs... usually my mother, who I fear may one day flush my own head down the toilet.
I've looked it all up online and whilst it all looks rather simple... I'm a little overwhelmed by how different my toilet tank looks in comparison to the many that provide assistance with their own! PLEASE HELP... THANKS :money: (Who is this? lol)
Right.. it's not letting me upload the picture which is a little frustrating... BUT I'VE FOUND A WAY AROUND IT... Could you please check the link on the reason for editing, just below! THANKS (:

Take the lid off the cistern, like you did for the photo and hold the ball valve up so that no water is allowed to enter. Then flush the toilet. Do you hear the noise? Then, when the cistern is empty, release the ball valve and let the cistern start to fill, do you hear the noise? This way you can determine if it is the water filling or the toilet emptying that is the problem.0

Hi Coconutman,
I'll be following this thread with interest as I have the exact same problem. It would be just dandy if I could find out how to fix it without plumber call out costs.
Best of luck.

Mine used to do this on the old house (the times I've typed that or something similar now ... must have been a right crap hole of a house !!!).
The noise was the water supply pipework resonating. Used to build up in volume quite quickly as the ball valve was getting close to fully closed, and sounded remarkably like the Queen Mary in the fog. In my case, grabbing hold of the pipe as the noise started damped it out ! The noise disappeared when I replaced the cistern gubbins (both ball valve and flush mechanism) with something more modern when the flush syphon diaphragm died.0 -
It's a bit hard to see from the picture, but it looks as if the inlet is the type with a flexible polythene tube going down into the tank. As this ages, it can lose shape, becoming flat instead of round.
The upshot of this is that water entering the flat tube can resonate, rather like blowing through a reed on a musical instrument. Unlike the instrument, however, the result is likely to be a farting noise!
I cured this problem by reducing the length of the tube until the noise stopped happening. There was no other problem generated by having a much shorter tube.0 -
I come across this quite often and I will pretty much guarantee that it is the ball valve washer that is causing the noise. The washer deteriorates with age and as the water rushes past it to fill the cistern, it starts to resonate. Replacing the washer will, I'm confident, cure your problem. Hope this helps.0

What he said ^^
This is normally caused by the diaphragm washer within the valve assmbly becoming stiff.
They can usually be replaced quite easily.

Ditto ,its the washer and costs about £1 to replace. So easy to do .
The washer won't look any different to the new one but trust me it will fix the problem.Pure Dog Loving0
