As it's a PX, then he must be a dealer. He is therefore attempting to remove your right to a warranty of not less than 12 weeks.
I feel this may well end up in Court.
Btw, what is the make/model of the car ?.
The service light on my Berlingo is a spanner. It shows up on the odometer alongside the miles to the next service. It then goes off and the odometer then reverts to the actual mileage.
On my mate's old vectra the service light was also a spanner, but this remained on if not reset after a service.
It all depends on the vehicle.
Astra 1.4 2005 (05 plate)
I have had a read of the AA link on the thread where a private seller is being taken to court and one of the things highlighted is if you are given false information verbally, would that not count in this case?0 -
Right. I used to have a 2005 Zafira (basically a big Astra) and from memory, the EMS light is an engine with a spanner incorporated.Never Knowingly Understood.

OH told me it was a spanner, I didn't see it specifically. He's asleep so can't double check but a quick google ofthe mk5 warning lights Shows a car with a spanner incorporated. He did consult the manual and our mechanic neighbour confirmed it was not a service light. He explained that the power was missing when driving it too which would indicate an EM fault. Again, this only became apparent when driving home. Going from a V6 2.5 to a 1.4 you'd expect to feel a difference but it was as if it was holding back.0 -
Unless you represented yourself as a trader to get a trade price, go back now and get them to check it, repair/replace/refund. Equally they are not allowed to wash their hands of trading laws by any notice or expression.
I realise we are in an age of code readers are king, but another industry joke is that if a second hand vauxhall doesn't have a warning light on, they've taken out the bulb!
Frankly the appearance of the warning light isn't the howler on this car, it is the tapping at idle after it gets hot. If you are lucky, a previous owner has been negligent and a good oil and filter change would fix it. More likely on a middle-aged cheapo, the damage has already been done and the oil pump is as worn out as the rest of the engine.
Get it back asap.0 -

It's going back tomorrow to be hocked up so we'll wait to see what they offer as a result. It looked ideal for our budget, full service history and recent MOT. Just had £600 of work done. can't remember what exactly but included new filters and oil change, brake disks and pads - nothing alarming at all!
I always wanted a Honda Civic, should have stood my ground this time! :rotfl:0 -
Just because a car is old doesnt mean its going to be unreliable, your 15 year old Ford would have been fairly cheap to fix.
My old car would be almost 11 years old now, I bought it at 5 years old for £2000, took the mileage to over 170,000 and the new owner is putting over 3000 miles a month onto it.
Regular oil changes and regular checks on the fluids and if something doesnt feel right then get it checked before it causes problems.
I know someone that had the oil light come on whilst on the motorway and thought lets get off the motorway quickly so drove even faster towards the next exit which was quite a few miles away.
They didnt make it, it went bang with a hole in the block and internal bits of the engine scattered around the engine bay.
It must have rubbed off on my offspring, daughter was on a driving lesson and spotted the battery warning light had come on as they were driving.
Instructor had to call the lesson off and return her home. But thanked her for spotting the light so quickly. He managed to get home and get the problem sorted.
Its how you treat them and getting problems sorted before they become large bills.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
Forgotmyname, I'm aware of that. We've never had a new car, always purchased used and have previously had a Corsa which was a good little car. The Ford has never given us any grief and it's actually been a shame to change as its so nice to drive and easy to maintain but too expensive to run. This new car would have saved us about £50 a month in tax and petrol alone! luckily it's not up for sale yet as it needs its MOT which its in for next week so we're not going to be carless.0

Your legal recourse is through the Sale of Goods Act, which says that the goods (not car specific) must be fit for purpose. For used goods, that's caveated with reasonable expectations for the age/described condition/price.
For a 10yo "PX to clear", advertised as having no warranty and not being checked, those caveats are significant. BUT... for a significant mechanical fault that becomes apparent in such short order? That would be covered. Unless the dealer is willing to accept that, though, you will have to take him to court.0 -

Where do people get this rubbish from. scary thing is look at the amount of posts they've had. Thats alot of false information0 -
An engine light on and a bit of tappet noise at tickover doesn't necessarily constitute a major problem on a cheap car. Just get an OBD2 reader and check what the fault actually is. Sometimes they throw spurious codes like occasional misfire on cylinder 3 or some such nonsense which leaves the engine light set. (I bet the garage had reset it though to sell it).0
