attachments and downloads not opening properly

Hi
I am having trouble with my attachments and downloads.
When I open them all I get is jumbled up letters like this:

Can anyone please advise me what to do.

the answer depends on what they are, if they are supposed to be readable, you need to install a program that can read them, adobe reader for example if they are pdf's0
