Vodafone default on my credit report

Hi, I hope I can get some help & advice here as this VODAFONE default on my credit report is putting a great strain on both myself and my pregnant wife. Our mortgage is on hold at the moment because of this.
In 2011 we had to leave UK for 1 year to care for a relative so we've closed our phone contracts etc. We believed we did but apparently my vodafone contract was still left opened and bills continued to go out every month. Needless to say we had no idea as we were not in the UK.
We returned in November 2012 and by the end of the year we received a letter from Lowell debt collectors asking to pay 607 pounds. After we made a couple of calls to Vodafone to see what happened we understood that somehow there was an error and our account hadn't been closed and the debt kept growing bigger. Honestly it scared us as we've never had a debt in our life, so we paid it straight away. We were then told that because it was an error and we paid it immediately as we learnt about it they will remove the default from my credit report. So we thought everything is fine until this month when we had our mortgage application denied because of this default. We called Vodafone again and they said the debt is still there which shocked us. So we called Lowell, which confirmed the debt being paid in February 2013, and our account being closed and satisfied. They sent me an email of confirmation as well to forward to Vodafone, but since 2 days ago I've been trying to get in contact to the relevant department at Vodafone and nobody seems to be able to help me. I've been on the phone, on the live chat, you name it and still couldn't get through a person able to help me. It is getting incredibly frustrating.
I am able to prove that I was out of the country and it was never my intention to miss any payment. I have shredded the final bill I received from Vodafone in 2011 as I didn't imagine I would need it. It seems even though I got a final bill the account remained open. I did pay the whole amount as soon as I found out about it. I hope that Vodafone, as a gesture of good will will remove the default, but I just need to speak to somebody in their team.
After a 2h conversation on the vodafone live chat I got a number to call which is not of any help to me as I can't go through to any operator.
Please help!
All replies kindly appreciated!
