DVLA Driving clearance after health setback

All,

My husband suffered temporary motor issue due to GBS syndrome. He is now completely mobile and fit for driving. We have been waiting approx 3 months to hear back from DVLA Medical team regarding their decision to inform insurance company.

When we called DVLA, lady on the phone said to speak to GP and get his advice. If GP gives clearance can we go and let the insurance company know.

Any suggestions?

In most cases you are entitled to drive whilst your consultant/GP state you are fit to drive and you feel well enough whilst the DVLA consider your case. This appears to be the advice you've been given and so as long as it was from the medical team at the DVLA it is reasonable to follow it.

If the DVLA disagree with your Dr then you need to stop driving once they inform you of their opinion

Then call their medical advice line and get them to confirm the same, namely that this isnt one of the minority of conditions that have rules beyond your doctors say so.

I was/am in a similar situation. Advised by DVLA that whilst my application is being formally investigated I am able to drive in accordance with my Consultant's opinion. I requested and received a letter from DVLA confirming their advice.

They have now advised that a form is being sent to my Consultant for him to complete. I offered to send them the letter I had from him saying I was able to drive again but it has to be in a certain format.

I was advised to keep their letter of confirmation in my car in case I was questioned by Police. Not sure whether or not this means I show up on their database as not having a licence - but "just in case"!
