Carpet Cleaning - "over the counter"

Hi
Can anyone recommend a good all over carpet cleaner?
We don't want to go down the route of getting someone in and we live too far (without a car) to hire one from the dry cleaners.
So I'm looking to buy something like this as a temporary quick fix, but wondered if they actually work and do you recommend a certain brand?

at the moment we've got "clean patches" from spot cleaning.

We used similar vanish foam stuff to clean a carpet in our last house, 'twas a load of rubbish.
Are you sure you can't get to a B&Q or supermarket and rent a rug doctor for a day? They really are ace. Around these parts you can rent them from Morrisons, Tesco, B&Q and The Range and possibly loads of other places.0 -
The nearest one is 40-45 minutes walk, I don't fancy dragging it that far.0

That'll be about 3 miles away - get a bus or walk there, get a taxi back (assuming it will fit in the boot of car)???"You were only supposed to blow the bl**dy doors off!!"0 -
I would buy a Vax or Bissell online and use this carpet shampoo that seems to be highly rated.
I must confess to having a Vax machine and a bottle of the very same shampoo. I am waiting for some more warmer weather before I rate the shampoo.0 -

I wouldn't. We loaned a very expensive and noisy Bissell from a family member, and although it produced a lot of grimy water and slime it didn't work a fraction as well as a Rug Doctor.0 -
We did think about buying a carpet cleaner, but its another large item to store in our small flat.0

personally I tried a rug doctor hire and didnt think it was that good. Maybe I had unrealistic expectations
