1st time claiming tax credits

I'm about to be made redundant and luckily have found another job. We've never claimed tax credits before, my salary is about to drop around 10k a year to 18k.
Wife is on DLA low rate and ESA.
Will HMRC take into account new wages or is it only ever done on last years salary? If it is we are in the do's do's.
I'm aware of my rights for redundancy from Government which will help a bit but guessing will take around 12 weeks or so to come through.
We have 2 children 8 and 4, no child care costs.

Blondebubbles,
Thank you so much for replying and so quickly.
Wife gets £442 a month ESA if that helps.
I can't see where on the form that I put new salary down, only income up to April 2015.
To make matters even more complicated new job is commission based so wages will change monthly! What a pickle this is.Helping the country to sleep better....ZZZzzzzzzz0 -
That makes sense, thanks for putting my mind at ease a little.

TIP: Keep both electronic and hard copies of ALL correspondence with this outfit. Create your own folder / file on your computer if you have to.
Keep periodic tabs on your statements, and bank account statements to ensure they all tally up.
There is a very high probability that this outfit will send you an 'overpayment' letter at a later date, threatening in it's manner expecting you hand over money. It's best to have all paperwork and evidence at the ready0 -
I'll certainly do that, thanks for the heads up.Helping the country to sleep better....ZZZzzzzzzz0
