Barclays online application - need to take ID to branch - credit check ok?

Hey everyone.
I have been plagued with bad credit my whole life since I was 18 and made stupid mistakes. I'm now 33. I only realised recently that half the things shouldnt' be on there anymore including a CCJ. They've since been removed and now on my credit file I had 3 defaults (600, 1000 400) pounds, and a savings account with nothing in it. The last default was 2 years ago (when I lost my job).

I am trying to get a business up and running and that is going well. But having no bank account isn't an option any longer, as I only have a savings account now and not even a visa debit card. Talking to business mentor helping me, we agreed I need to get a bank account setup.

I was going to go for a basic account, but then thought - perhaps I might somehow get a more standard personal bank account opened, as it's been a long time since I last tried and my credit report is a bit more up to date.

So I went to Barclays website and completed an online application. The system said at the end

Sorry, we can't complete your application online
We weren't able to verify your identity. Don't worry – we're securely saving your details so you can continue with your application.
Your application reference number is: xxxx

What happens next?

You'll need to book an appointment with a Community Banker at one of our branches within 90 days – they'll be able to retrieve your information so you won't need to complete another application form.
Along with your application reference number above, you'll need to take 2 different forms of ID with you to your appointment. The documents you choose must be originals.
One of the following proofs of identity:

  • Full and valid UK or non-UK passport with MRZ (Machine Readable Zone) capability, which is 2 or 3 lines of numbers, letters and chevrons (<<<)
  • Full UK photo or paper driver's licence (showing your residential address)
  • National identity card (photo cards only) with MRZ (Machine Readable Zone) capability, which is 2 or 3 lines of numbers, letters and chevrons (<<<)

AND

One of the following proofs of your current UK address:

  • Full UK photo or paper driver's licence (if you're not using it to prove who you are)
  • UK bank, mortgage or credit card statement that's less than 3 months old (we can't accept printed online statements)
  • Utility bill that's less than 3 months old (we can't accept online bills, or any type of mobile phone bills)
  • Council tax bill for the current financial year (we can't accept online bills)
If you don't have any of these, get in touch to find out what other forms of ID we accept.

We'll also send you an email shortly with all of these details outlined.
Please don't try to apply again online without first getting advice on the status of your application from your Community Banker.

The fact they can not ID me is probably because i'm not on electoral role (I am on it at a past time, but not on it currently at this address on my credit report - I've since added myself with the LA and they've confirmed im on it now).

Anyway... my question is --- does the fact they have asked me for ID mean they've also credit checked me? Because they must have searched the credit file to find out they aren't happy with my ID?

I'm trying to figure out if they've done the credit check part yet, or if I go to the trouble of getting ID documents (as I don't have them to hand) - and then go into a branch if it will likely fail anyway due to my credit history - or does the fact they are asking me to bring in ID imply my application has passed some kind of precheck?

Thanks for advice!

Take the I'd that's been requested and you will find out. I bet its because you weren't on the ER so they need proof you live where you do.

Don't use personal bank account for business purposes. It is against the T&Cs. You need to get a business account. Last I heard is that Natwest, Coop and Yorkshire Bank offer free business accounts for a couple of years.

Looks like if you don't have either a passport or a driving licence (note they can't even spell this one - it not driver's licence in this country) you might be stuffed. What do the large numbers of people without such documents do, I wonder? I'd be interested to know what other documents they might accept.

They will accept a birth certificate won't they?

Typical with Barclays online applications for anything: You enter your postcode and then find address, the address given is wrong so you enter the address manually in the spaces provided and whammo your address can't be verified and you have to take ID into a branch. Last happened to me with Barclays version of mPay and I cancelled the application due to principles: The postcode I gave was correct but the address they provided was wrong. If their software can't do a simple task like looking up a postcode what else is it not able to do?

I have just had exactly the same response from them. I would pretty much guarantee it is because you are not on the electoral roll.

I have just moved house, have a basic account with them already, and have just tried to apply for a general account and have had the same email. When I did a soft search with them on the Barclaycard website part they could not confirm my identity either - even though I also have a Barclaycard!
