How often would you expect a variable IP address to change with a fibre connection ?
My TalkTalk connection has remained the same for almost 3 months and I am not on a static IP address.....

Can depend on various factors, but if you leave your router on all the time then it's quite likely it will keep getting the same address each time the DHCP lease expires.

Dynamic IP's dont usually change while they are in use. (Some ISP's used to force changes from time to time, but dont think any do now)

so if the router stays connected, then it wont change.

Im on Virgin with a dynamic ip, and it hasn't changed in 3 years

I have turned the router off (three times in the last 3 months) - once for 36 hours and still it held on to the IP address !!

Thats because the IP address is held on a lease. So if you reconnect before that lease expires, then you will get the same IP again.

if you want to change the IP address, you need to leave the router disconnected until the lease expires.

How long is that then ?
I want a new IP address - to see if the number of hacking attempts from China decreases ...

what kind of hacking attempts are you talking about ?

many of them dont target specific ips and just broadcast across whole addresses hoping to find something.

how long the lease is will depend on the ISP and how they setup their DHCP server.

i would suggest somewhere between 48 hours and a week would likely work

If you change the router you will probably pick up a different IP instantly.

Otherwise I would guess at closer to a week than a day for the lease to expire.

I agree with above in that you are probably wasting your time as your new address will receive the same connection attempts from China.

    Not with plusnet.
All you need to do is to disconnect from the web from the router's interface having logged in (ie not even a router re-sync or even a total switch off) and then after 10 secs reconnect and hey presto - new IP address.

    Hi

    Well you could try and accept it willingly, and direct it to 127.0.0.1;

Look in your Router for something like this...

    Add Filter Range

    Device Name/Filter Name
    IP AddresstoolTipButton.png to toolTipButton.pngtoolTipButton.png

    Chinese probe

    8.16.32.64 to 127.0.0.1

and it wont be forwarded to your internal network.
