Getting MOT done before expiry

My MOT is due to expire on 27th July. I know you can get it done up to a month prior to the expiry date if you have your current MOT and you don't 'lose' any of the time on it ie if I was to get it done today, then it would still be valid until 27th July 2016, rather than expiring on 6th July 2016.
I have done this in previous years when I have had the current MOT certificate, and my understanding was that you had to have the previous certificate in order to preserve your expiry date.
Unfortunately I can't find the current MOT certificate. Does anyone know if it's possible to do this without the certificate, given that this information isn't held electronically.
I have googled but haven't found the answer yet, so would appreciate it if someone could tell me.
TIA.

It is - and it has been for a decade, since the test was computerised. The "certificate", for the last few years, has stated explicitly that it is no more than a receipt, and the main record is the computerised one.noelphobic wrote: »...given that this information isn't held electronically.0 -

I meant to say 'is held electronically'!
I know you don't need it if you buy your road tax online. I just had ig in my head that you needed it for the MOT.3 stone down, 3 more to go0 -
Nope and the MOT guy no longer needs to know when the last one expired either, the computer does it all for them.
I always book mine in close to the 28 days to give me time to fix anything if they find something that i missed.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0
