Help me please I have a baby son and live with my parents and I'm about to lose my maternity money but cant go out to work, The baby's father is out of the picture. I have no idea where to start with benefits. my parents own the house but I cant live rent free.........I just dont know where to start!

Wouldn't you go on Incapacity Benefit then? I got pregnant quickly in succession and wasn't entitled to SMP the second time round, so got Incapacity... and when it ran out they told me I could go and get a Drs not to stay on it, but I didn't bother as I went back to work when babes were 5 weeks old.

You can claim Income Support as you are unable to work due to having a child.
For your child you should claim Child Tax Credit and Child Benefit.

Thanks EE. that would be good of you if you could, I also wanted to know if I can claim rent allowance as I pay my parents for my keep? things are very strained and I would be better off in a council flat but have no idea where to start.

To get priority council accomodation you need to be homeless so if things are strained contact the council and put them in the picture that you cannot stay there

You can't get HB if you live with your parents.


You need to present yourself as potentially homeless at the local housing office and they have a duty to interview you and give a written decision. You then have a certian amount of time to appeal the decision. Contact Shelter for info.
