Hi
Hope I have posted this in the right place, not been on here for many years.
I would really appreciate some advice. I paid the final instalment of our holiday in vouchers (£60) and the company advised me to get it signed for in case it went lost. I sent it first class signed for with Royal Mail (£1.73).
You guessed it, it didn't arrive. I put a compensation claim in. I have proof of purchase of service, proof of the vouchers and proof of the amount. Thought it would be simple.
I have just received confirmation in writing from Royal Mail that they didn't not deliver the item but as it was money that is not included in their compensation scheme and they have refunded my postage cost in first class stamps!
I hate to be ungrateful  for the stamps as 6 are worth more than 1.73 but I expect my money so that I can spend it anywhere.....not on a company that has basically thieved my hard earned money already!
Secondly, I purchased the service at a post office counter and wasn't asked what was in my letter, therefore was not advised that if it was money it would not be covered. Surely they can't point out the small print if there wasn't any!
Thirdly, they have admitted liability so if I have proof of what was in the letter should they not be bound to pay it's worth back...even if it was in their list of things excluded (not pointed out at the time mind).
Many thanks for your time in advance.

A letter is assumed to be a letter. You should have told them what was in it. It wasn't pointed out as there's far too much that's prohibited. You should have researched.
Plus even if it was covered I think signed for only covers £25 as standard.
Here is Royal Mail information, freely available online and took me 2 minutes to find:
If you need to send valuables, money or jewellery, you should use Royal Mail Special Delivery Guaranteed™ as this will enable you to claim compensation in the unlikely event of loss or damage. Valuables sent using any other service are not eligible for compensation.0 -
Thanks Marlie, I appreciate your reply.
Standard covers £50 and, yes, I spotted on the website earlier but I didn't look before I sent as it had been recommended to me by the company.
I don't really understand the point of the service if it doesn't guarantee it, even though they admit they didn't send it.

Signed for doesn't provide tracking, only delivery confirmation. (I assume that's why they changed it from recorded delivery) it's pretty useless nowadays, special delivery or bust I'm afraid0 -
Have you phoned the voucher company and asked them to cancel and reissue?0

Standard post as you put it only covers £20.
Signed for post is sent the same way as normal post and is in no way secure. Did you tell the person at the post office that it contained cash and asked if it was okay?
You may be better off asking your travel company to replace the vouchers if they can be cancelled. If they told you to send them signed for and not special maybe you could ask them to take som of the responsibility and as a guesture of goodwill to replace them.0
