disconnection issues

 I'm going mad here so please try and hep.

My PC has decided to disconnect itself for no apparent reason. It started late afternoon, although I first noticed it a few days ago. I get the dial up connection box popping up and its a real nightmare going from site to site.

Im on broadband with wireless and made sure the pc upstairs was turned off - it is, and my husband can use his lappy without a problem. We are not networked.

This is the longest I have been connected since about 3 pm.

Was it perhaps certain sites? I am totally lost.

What broadband is it and have you checked it wasn't an issue with the ISP network?

check your pc for virus or spyware, its not unknown for a virus to attempt to connect to a premium rate site via a dial up modem, effective if you have a modem connected. I remember years ago before BB, my pc would auto dial up onto a premium number whilst I was at work, I didnt realise this until I got a HUGE phone bill.

  • Without making any accusations of illegal activity, are you by any chance using any peer 2 peer filesharing stuff (such as bittorrent, limewire, bearshare, or whatever)

If you are then these can cause your computer to drop connections, especially bittorrent.

The main problem is the number of simultaneous connections they make, which can max out win XP's capacity...

Thanks all for your help. Somehow.....? dial up connection was set to connect, I think if the broadband dropped. After trying a million things on here last night I got sick fed up and set it not to. No problems now.
(PS Im hoping its not the premium number thing got in somehow - I had it before as well. No peer to peer stuff either. I'm 40 now and the fear of going to jail outweighs a free CD :))
