Apologies in advance, but...
Do you think an MSc will leave you sufficiently qualified for a career as a man with a van, or should you be considering staying on for a PhD?0 -
He'll o heady a lot more0

I think you are probably thinking along the right lines in investing in yourself with the money. That amount of money will make more of a difference to you than if you had it sitting in a bank or invested in the stock market.0

If you wish to invest rather than save, consider starting a stocks and shares ISA and adding to it on a regular basis?

It sounds like it's money which you don't need, and can stick away and effectively forget about for 20 years.
For a £12 fee at X-O you could whack £2,988 in Vanguard LifeStrategy 100 and £2,000 in Woodford Equity. Fairly "safe" funds.
But ideally, you'll do half an hour's research into investing, and find it slightly less opaque than you might have thought previously. Then you'll do another hour's research. And then 50 hour's research. And then another 50, to be safe. And then it'll be October, and finally you'll decide... £2,980 in Vanguard LifeStrategy 100 and £2,008 in Woodford Equity.
(My vote's for the research. You might have an epiphany and realise that saving for retirement at 65 is fine, but investing in retirement at 45 is possible OH MY GOD IT'S POSSIBLE YAAAAY. xylophone's links above are a good start. Lifestyle blogs like MrMoneyMustache also give a lot of information.)Q: What kind of discussions aren't allowed?
A: It goes without saying that this site's about MoneySaving.
Q: Why are some Board Guides sometimes unpleasant?
A: We very much hope this isn't the case. But if it is, please make sure you report this, as you would any other forum user's posts, to forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com.0 -
Don't invest in equities, index trackers etc.
Spend a couple of hours having a good read of the "matched betting" forum on here (it's not gambling btw, despite the name), and then use it as a bankroll for getting into that. It'll be the best thing you've ever done and will hands down beat any other investment for return vs risk.0 -
I think that will be a better investment than a season ticket for Newcastle...
Also, matched betting is consistent with something I am interested in as well.
Roll on the new season (and any Newcastle signings)0
