For a wooden fence, what are the advantages and disadvantages of both painting a fence and staining it?
and is the time taken for both the same ?

Depends on the effect you're after.
A painted white picket fence, New England style, might suit your property, or it might be a completely out of place, difficult to maintain irrelevance.
Staining is always easier, as there is less preparation, but the effect might not last as long, because most woodstains bleach/leach out or, if they are not solvent based, flake and otherwise erode. Re-painting, however, needs a bit of prep.
If there is vegetation involved, painting/staining is a bit of a nightmare, so I go for a tanalised product and let nature take its course from there. My feeling is that it's hard to improve on nature and fences are just utility objects with little to warrant emphasising them.
But that's me. What do you wish to achieve?0 -
we recently went to the Bea and Queue outlet for stain to do 6 panels. The price for what is basically coloured water was crazy to we simply bought 5 ltrs of bathroom paint off the returns shelf. £8.00
Now you might think that this is not a good choice but its the second time i have used odd paint for waney lap fencing. The last time 7 years ago was Bright Orange emulsion paint. 7 years and still good but Mrs wanted a change so turquose was the choice... sounds awful. Its very cool and a part of a japanese style feature. on't be fooled by water based stains, they are very fashionable but most emusion paint is as good if not better. The other 24 panels in the garden are painted with Water based Acrylic off ebay. Sprayed on and now 9 years old. Still good to go. (£45 for 20 ltrs)0 -
IF it's treated wood, i 'd do neither as you will have to do it every year.
Let the wood colour age naturally...0
