Advice on slow desktop

Options
You guys have helped me in the past with my own laptop, so here is a new challenge for you!

My mum has the following desktop: Acer AS X3810 Desktop PC (Intel Celeron Dual-Core, 4GB, 500GB, Windows 7.

It's five years old.

It's now running very slowly. I've uninstalled programs no longer needed and have run CCleaner, with no great improvement. It takes ages to load web pages.

Is it just a rubbish machine, or just does it need some tlc?

Thanks
Maureen

Is it just the internet that is slow? have you run a speedtest?

    Wired or wireless internet connection?

When it is running slow, have you looked in Task manager to see what is running?

Have you looked at what is running at startup? You can use CCleaner(tools/startup) for this

Go to ebay and get a quad core CPU.

Your machine support Intel Pentium Core 2 Quad Q6600/Q8200/Q8300/Q9300/Q9400/Q9550/Q9650 processor

    Q8200 is £20

You probably need some rubbing alcohol for cleaning and thermal phase when re-install CPU heatsink
I recommend Arctic cooling MX-4, it is good, but you may find it not good value if you just use it by once.

    Download speed 18.34 Mbps

    Upload speed 1.04 Mbps.

These are the results from the speedtest.

I suggest you download CC Cleaner to free things up.

Perhaps try reading the OP first? ;)

  • I recommend (this is a full days work) save your documents on to an external drive or USB, do a refresh of the OS to default state, install a good antivirus (I use Norton) do all windows updates, when there are no more updates, check for driver updates - download Intel's driver utility and install updates that it detects.

After that install all your essential programs - Chrome, MS Office etc then restore all your documents from your external device, then finally clean with Ccleaner and defrag with the windows defrag.

I have done this routine with 5 systems previously for a small business and it has worked well.
