As it turns out, I am aware that if they can prove by evidence presented that it was a genuine error on there part that I will be liable for re-payment. That's ok and at the moment I really want to keep relations good through out the discussions as if it ever went before a court, we would have to show that we both made every effort possible to resolve the issue first. So calmly I will go and wait for them to present their facts to me first.

I am reasonable. So expect their 'evidence' soon in the post this week.

    Thank you!

This is one of the very few MSE posts that really did make me laugh aloud. Incredible that the "higher ups" are so incompetent as to fail to realise something so obvious! I just wonder what other stupid mistakes they have made.

What a way to run a country!

The probability is that no 'higher ups' were made aware of the situation. This is the result of the ever increasing reliance on computer accounting systems.

The OP will have to pay it back. There are many examples of Banks etc wrongly crediting money to accounts and rectifying their error. IIRC people who have spent some of the money have been prosecuted for theft.
We'd figured that we had been overpaying on our direct debit.

I assume that was said tongue in cheek.

First time round, they'd been taking a direct debit for a busted meter, really racked up the credit then. i guess this time they might have saw the previous history of that credit, who knows. Kept that on ok, might have hired a smarter cookie this time round.

The thing to do in this situation (I know it's too late) is to write to EDF asking for written confirmation that if, in the future they decide it was a mistake that you can keep it.

There should be some law that prevents companies reclaiming mistakes they have made if the person benefitting from the mistake has double checked with the company that it is not a mistake.
Changing the world, one sarcastic comment at a time.

By the way, just a bit of info. It's a business account not a pot farm.

Well the law does state that genuine mistakes are reclaimable the proof will be coming this week. I refuse to get excited and start screaming and shouting 'my money, my money' because sometimes it really does rain down !!!! when you least (or even if you do) expect it. .
  • I think this is an enjoyable spoof thread which is successfully highlighting people’s gullibility in the area of shock horror stories about energy suppliers!

heh, heh, I'm glad you said that as I couldn't see how the figures could stack up for a domestic supply and I was going to express a degree of scepticsm about your story! :D
