Pay off before transactions appear

Hi,

I'm looking to make a £3,800 transaction on my Tesco credit card on Wednesday/Thursday, limit £4,000. I paid the £500 deposit on the card today, which will obviously take a few days to appear, plus current balance is around £750. Can I make a payment now of the balance plus the £500 to ensure that it completely clears the card by Wednesday/Thursday? Or will that cause problems?

Theoretically it can, but in practice extremely unlikely.

That said, for many CCs FPs usually clear the same day.

It should be fine. I sometimes make payments as soon as I've spent on the card (cash withdrawals when abroad for example) and it's usually reflected in the available balance within an hour or two.

Not done it with Tesco so can't speak for them personally but we have done it for the exact same reason with an Aqua card and had no problems at all. As soon as the amount was shown as a pending transaction a payment was made; the online balance check did show the debit before the credit.
