There is a certain illogicality in the Warm Homes Discount scheme because the delivery date of the annual lump sum payment is not particularly well-synchronised with the fluctuations in monthly heating costs.

I am in the core group of recipients, which means that I automatically receive WHD, and DWP usually write to me after my energy supplier has already credited my account and tell me that my WHD should arrive within the following two to three months.

But I am on a monthly payment plan and the supplier is under no obligation to immediately reduce my monthly payment in order to reflect the one-off credit of £140. And they refuse to make a one-off payment of the unexpected credit into my bank account.

I have formulated a plan whereby I am going to switch from a monthly fixed direct debit to a quarterly variable direct debit on receipt of bill (because, so far as I can work these things out, my current supplier offers no additional direct debit discount for paying monthly rather than quarterly).

When, on a quarterly bill, the WHD credit suddenly appears, then it will immediately be subtracted from the amount payable, and I will benefit immediately from the discount.

In the meantime, I have one of those current accounts which pays 5% on current balances, and I shall use it to set up my own monthly payment plan so that there will always be enough in the account to pay the quarterly bill whenever it arrives, and will earn me a few pennies interest while I am waiting.
