New Door Step

Recently moved house and the front door step is brass (I have memories of my Mum spending hours on her knees polishing ours). I don't want to spend my days doing the same!
I'm sure I've seen something somewhere that you can fix over the top of any door step to change it, but can't remember where. I've done various searches, but am struggling, I think partly because I don't know the right name of what I'm looking searching for.
Any suggestions please?
