Charged in Pounds £ Instead of Euro €

Something to watch out with when hiring a car, buying a meal, shopping etc. You have to make sure the price you are shown in the terminal is the price you are paying. Merchants are supposed to offer you the option of how to pay, but in reality many don't. Some hand held terminals are programmed to automatically offer £ Sterling and when you question the cashier you get a shrug of the shoulders. When you get your receipt, it will also say I was offered the option to pay in my own or local currency (or similar wording), so you would find it very hard to contest it.

Well, if you know the transaction amount in euros and can see the amount in GBP in your online account, it's simple enough to calculate the exchange rate and see if it corresponds with the MasterCard rate or not. I guess that's what OP did, not sure if he mentions...
It can be tricky if you don't know exactly when it was converted, and that should give you an idea, but there's more than one example of people on these forums seeing the £ and jumping to conclusions.0
