You usually have to book well in advance to get the best deals in the London budget hotels, especially in the peak summer holiday time. You could look at Travelodge, Premier Inn and Holiday Inn hotels in London or look at staying in an area outside of London that has good commuter links and travelling in.

Travelodge at Cricklewood is £42 Sun 2 Aug, £59 Mon, £66 Tues, £66 Wed, £52 Thrs, £43 Fri, £55 for Sat. currently. 5 mins walk around the corner to train station with direct train to Kings Cross/St Pancras (20 min). You can go from Cricklewood to Farrington station (15 min journey) and change onto the circle line to Tower Hill for the Tower Of London (10 minute journey). Also you can change at Kings Cross and go one stop to Euston to pick up the fast train to watford Junction (15 mins) and pick up the Harry Potter tour bus (£2) to the Harry Potter studios In watford (need to book on line in advance). You can also get the train to Kentish Town and pick up the Nothern tube line to Camden Town for the Sunday market at Camden Lock and London Zoo or to get the canal boat from the Lock. You can also go from Cricklewood to Mill Hill Broadway on the train and pick up the bus from there to the RAF Museum (free entry and it has always been a favourite of my children and hubby).

The no 16 bus (also a night bus) stops near the hotel and using that it takes 10 minutes or 20 minute walk to the Kilburn jubillee tube station. from Kilburn from there it is a direct 15 min tube journey to Waterloo for the London Eye, Houses Parliament, Big Ben, London Dungeons, Thames embankment, river boats to the Tower Of London etc. 10 minutes to Green park for Buckignham Palace or change there onto Piccadilly line and 3 stops i.e. 5 mins to Covent Garden for the street entertainers, China Town, M&M World, Theatres etc. Also change at Green Park and it is 4 stops to South Kensington for the Natural History, Science and V&A museums. It is also only a few stops on the tube direct to Wembley Park if you want to go to the National Stadium.

The no 16 bus goes to Victoria if you want to walk from there to Buckingham Palace and before that stops at Marble Arch if you want to go to Oxford Street for shopping or to Hyde Park. . Also if you are using megabus or national express coaches they come into the coach station at Victoria, so it is handy to hop on the bus from there. The Theatre, that has the show Wicked on is also just beside the bus terminal, if you want to go and queue before the box office opens to get a seat in the first two rows (they only sell the front 2 rows on the day at the box office for £29.50 as day seats). We had a nice pre-theatre carvery meal at the nearby Reubens at the Palace hotel in the Old Masters restuarant for £19.50 for two courses. It is directly opposite the palace and the service is 5stsr and the piano playing is good. Drinks are expensive, but they will pour you iced water freely if you want. Book in advance though as it does get busy. The 316 bus goes from near the hotel to Westfields shopping centre at White City. Use a contactless bankers card for travel or get an oyster card on arrival and top up as required. You can also use www.tfl.gov.uk to plan your journeys on public transport.

There is a Tesco store underneath the TL Cricklewood hotel for snacks and a Whetherspoons pub a few minutes walk away for cheap breakfasts and meals.

The 4star Crown Moran hotel is a few minutes walk away from the TL and the restuarant there often has deals on Groupon.

For best rates, either book months ahead, or short notice (eg the day before). Medium notice is peak time!

I tend to look on trivago the day before going, there are often bargains to be had as hotels fill up odd beds here and there. It's risky, but I did for instance on the Olympic Opening night get a 4* large room at Tower Bridge for £78.
