Painting a pine bed frame, what preparation needs to be done.

I am wanting to paint my old fashioned ornate king size pine bed frame in black with a satin finish. Can I use paint stripper to remove the varnish instead of sanding. Also which primer and paint is the best to use to avoid peeling/chipping. Hoping someone can give me some advice. Many thanks

You don't need to strip it, a general sand will do.
I used quick dry undercoat and quick dry satin on mine, you could seal with a coat of matt varnish for durability if needed.
    Another option is chalk paint.

I done a bedroom suite last year, as well as all the doors and skirtings in the house

    I used Zinsser. B.I.N primer

That stops the knots etc burning through. It's a pain to get on but does a brilliant job. Worth paying for

Thanks suki1964 just looked it up on Amazon seems excellent stuff and I can avoid sanding the bed frame.
Also wondering if I can use it on a new MDF headboard with painted finish I've just bought from Next, they only sell it in Ivory and I want to paint it a soft white and I didn't want to rough it up by sanding.
