Query about Specsavers and their 'golden ticket' offer.

Not sure if this is the right place to post, and I am sorry it is a bit long.

Basically, my husband went to Specsavers 3 weeks ago, as he had not had new glasses for 4 years and his glasses weren't too great anymore.

So he picked 2 pairs in the 2 for £69 offer that they have. He needed UV protection and a reaction lens where it goes dark in the sun, and a thin lens with glare reduction. (This was just on the 'distance' pair and the other pair were reading glasses and didn't need all the same 'frills, only the thin lens.) 'Shockingly this ended up being £280 when the offer was two for £69! So we were shocked by the cost, but apparently, the extras do not come cheap. Oh and also there was and the fact that conveniently the 'two for £69' offer does not apply as the glasses were different prescriptions! (1 reading and 1 distance.)

Before we left they gave him 2 'golden tickets' which gives him 50% off any pair. He said, he could do with an extra pair of distance glasses, and a pair of sunglasses with nothing but the basic stuff in, just his prescription. So today he picked two £69 pairs again. As they were half price with the golden ticket, they should have both been £34.50 per pair.

With 50% off for basically the same glasses (exactly the same distance pair, and a pair of basic prescription sunglasses) we figured it would be about £125 to £135 for the 2 pairs with the 50% off. (I mean the sunglasses were going to have less frills than the reading glasses he got the other week.)

The lady said she recommended having the sunglasses 'polarised' which is £60!!! But the 50% off brings it down to £30. So my husband said 'OK.'

So we expected to pay maybe £140...for the two pairs (as there was 50% off remember...) So imagine our shock when she came up with £260! Almost as much as he paid for the two pairs 3 weeks ago, at full price!

My husband looked at me as if to say 'is that all right?' And I just said 'no we can't afford another big hit in the account. We paid £280 only 2 weeks ago, you will have to leave it for now.''

Then the girl said 'I will see what I can do' and fiddled with her keyboard for a minute, and then said 'I can get it down to £260! (Still an amount we cannot afford.)

I said 'I was expecting the cost to be half of what we paid the other week as it has 50% off...' She looked a bit puzzled and confused, and went off to speak to someone and came back and said 'we can get it down to £230 for you.'

In the end, we said we will just take the sunglasses for now (as they were the cheaper of the two,) but even they came out at £98. Funny as they were supposed to be £69 pairs that were half price because of the golden ticket... with no extra frills (except the £30 for the polarisation.) I figured £34.50 for the glasses as they are two for £69 and £30 on top for the polarisation, so £64.50... so where did she get £98 from? And that was after she had strangely knocked it down from £120. Come to think of it, where on earth did she get £120 from?!

Surely something is wrong here? How can the price be virtually the same price with 50% off?

And how come the girl kept chopping bits off the price when we said we can't afford it?

After all this, the sunglasses my husband had picked, were no good, as the frame was too big for his prescription, and the girl said she had been 'blackboxed' and couldn't put the order through anyway! So can he pick another frame?!

At this point he said 'we have to go.'

Has anyone else had a similar experience? The staff are friendly and he had a very good experience when he got his other glasses the other week and his glasses are OK, but this second experience was very odd indeed. Just chopping bits off the price willy-nilly, and no sense to the price. Supposed to be 50% off but cost almost as when there wasn't 50% off, and the second pair cost less than the second pair the other week.

they would need to be the same prescriptioj

He needed UV protection and a reaction lens where it goes dark in the sun, and a thin lens with glare reduction.

at this point, your add on costs would be thin lenses, uv protection and glare (60 for Uv, 40 for thin (thats 1st price bracket but could be upto £100 ish depending on how thin the lenses

(This was just on the 'distance' pair and the other pair were reading glasses and didn't need all the same 'frills, only the thin lens.)

you would need to pay extra on the reading glasse for thin lenses - apr £40 to £100

'Shockingly this ended up being £280 when the offer was two for £69! So we were shocked by the cost, but apparently, the extras do not come cheap.

It does say frames and single vision lenses only

Oh and also there was and the fact that conveniently the 'two for £69' offer does not apply as the glasses were different prescriptions! (1 reading and 1 distance.)

the 2 for £69 needs to be the same prescription, so you should have been offered the 2nd pair of each, whether you have the extras on 2nd pair again is additional cost. For me I have the 1st pair with reactions, and 2nd pair pay £12 for sunglass lenses or just hav them plain as a 2nd /emergency pair

    that sounds right

in theory I would have said £69 as basic option did you have any lenses thinned down??

I have worked my way around a few different opticians and ended up at specsavers as they have a clearer price structure,

What I would suggest is going in and asking to see the manager, even if you take this post, and use it as a base to see what has happened.

From the initial visit, surely you should have been offered the 2nd pair as the same prescription and then you choose if you want thin lenses, on both pairs and the same with the reading glasses.

    Hope you get sorted x

What are the terms and conditions for the 'Golden Ticket'.

The two for one offer cannot be used with any other offer.

    Terms and conditions

Cannot be used with other offers. Second pair from £69-£169 ranges, to the same price range or below and to the same prescription. £69-£149: PENTAX and other 1.5 single vision lenses included in both pairs. For PENTAX 1.5 Standard varifocal or bifocal lenses you pay for the lenses in your first pair. £169 Fineform and Rimless ranges: PENTAX and other 1.6 single vision lenses included in both pairs. For PENTAX 1.6 Standard varifocal or bifocal lenses you pay for the lenses in your first pair. All lenses are scratch-resistant. Extra Options available at an additional charge on both pairs.

Two for the prcie of one states the same prescription in each. That would not apply to a pair bought previously, only to the specs being bought at the same time.
  • Specsavers Golden Ticket is a scam.
    In brief:
Bought 2 sets glasses on 2 for 1 and got a "golden Ticket"
Went back in the timeframe and asked for the 50% off. I was told its cheaper to do the 2 for 1 and I could not use the 2 "offers" together.
    Well here's the thing:
I took photos all-round the store - no details of "the offer" everything just says 2 for the price of 1.
I asked could I buy just 1 pair and they said yes but its the same price as 2 for 1 therefore giving no benefit. Which in English means there is no offer as 2 for 1 is the standard price and they should be honouring the offer and giving 2 for 1 at a 50% reduction if you have a Golden Ticket.
I am today reporting them to the Advertising Standards and letting everyone know on twitter and Facebook.
    Sharp practice Specsavers.

I had a golden ticket after my last glasses purchase, 18 months ago.

To go with my two pairs of verifocals, I chose a pair of readers. Half price no problem.

Words, words, they're all we have to go by!.

(Pity they are mangled by this autocorrect!)
  • Specsavers are franchises so it is not in their interest to honour any vouchers so they try to find ways round them.

I have used Asda for the last three years and get four pairs for the price of two from Specsavers.

They have extra thin lenses included in the price, provided that your prescription warrants them (ie would be relatively heavy with normal lenses).

However, I still use Specsavers for eye tests as Asda weren't (still aren't ?) registered to do retinopathy tests, which you need annually ,if you have diabetes.
