Have you tried getting it cleaned and polished? Lunns will do it for free and it will look like new as platinum is soft and will scratch easily but unlike many other metals it'll polish without loss of material.

Your Mums ring could be a better cut or clarity even if it is smaller giving it more sparkle. Fake diamonds can look just as good but the diamond industry uses all those profits on marketing to convince us to buy the real thing.
