Trying to sort out breakdown cover - RAC renewal is £213 - online for new RAC customers its 139. (so much again for loyalty).

Just seen an AA cover for £160 but including £75 of free fuel via an AA Miles More Prepaid MasterCard.

Anyone used this option and how does it work?. I don't want to end up getting some sort of credit card that I end up paying for, , but in the face of it, it looks like an OK deal for me.

Thanks
Annie

  • It's a pre-paid card loaded with £75. When it's empty you throw it away.

That's still dearer than the ADAC for half the amount of cover/benefits.

This is "norm" nowadays with AA and RAC.

Take the AA offer and when comes to renewal the RAC will beat it by a mile with a new customer deal. Take that and in a year the AA will beat it again treating you as a new customer.............the recovery merry - go - round.

What's really annoying is the letter they send with the renewal saying for being a loyal customer I am now a silver member with all these additional things (which are also covered by my car insurance so I dont need them) thrown in for free..... and at a knock down price

Beware the fuel card incentive is not compatible with any of the cashback sites.

Your renewal maybe £213 but you do phone and haggle don't you?

I pay less than £140 for their top package and including their arrival cover which you probably dont have, unless you have a caravan/horsebox/trailer etc.

I just phone and say i have not called you out for x amoung of years and i can get a better deal with xx. No quibbles they just drop the price.

I used to do exactly that and managed to get similar figures.

But that's still not as good as ADAC.

The ADAC is run for the benefit of the members - as the AA & RAC used to be in the good old days - rather than the shareholders.

Spend a minute or two on google and see exactly who owns the AA and the RAC these days - you may get a surprise -they are just businesses ran for the owners' profit like any other commercial enterprise

I pay €109 for myself and Mrs Iceweasel per year for the ADAC 'Plus membership & Partner' package.

Any car - any age - any country.

There is nothing else even remotely comparable.

Try phoning the AA or Green Flag etc. when you fall ill or break a leg on holiday in the USA or Australia and tell them you need to be flown Home in a private Lear-Jet.

I wonder if the AA has 51 liveried helicopters or their own fleet of 4 jet air-ambulances with on-board intensive care facilities.

Be sure that you are not fooled into still thinking of the AA, RAC, etc as 'motoring' organizations with 'members' - you are just another paying customer, as you are at Tesco, Asda etc.

They just want to fleece you nowadays.

Remember when the AA and RAC patrol motorcyclists used to salute members when they met on the road?

Of course those days are long gone - I first had AA 'membership' back in the early 60's, and can remember those salutes well. Then you felt part of a club.

And no, I do not work for the ADAC - I'm just highlighting what can be done for members when greed for profit is not the first priority.

Yeah but ADAC wont take my caravan to a campsite and then take the car to to be fixed and then take me back home if it cannot be fixed during my holiday, and give me a courtesy car etc will it?
