Xbox 360 or Xbox One?

Options
My son would like an XBox 360 for his birthday in order to play minecraft online with his friends. Hes not a big gamer, but likes the lego games and of course minecraft.

I know the 360 is not the most current model and some good deals can be had for it. My question is if i buy this for him is it likely to be obsolete soon, can you get many games for it still if it is the odler version, I know hes not a big gamer fan now but that could change. Would I be bettwe off getting an XBox one as he will get more use out of it in the longterm, and if I do this can he play minecraft online against someone who has a 360? He says all his friends have 360s but I dont want to buy one if within a year they all upgrade to an XBox one.

Grateful for opinions.

xbox 360 is still suitable, I haven't bothered to go to xbox one because I can't justify the spend.

Fifa 16, one of the bigger titles, is still being released on xbox 360, so I'd be confident that other games will follow suit.

As you can get them for about £80 now a days, there would be no point in spending an extra £200 for the One.

No cross platform online playing (so no, xbone to xbox 360 games online)

Xbone is the longer term option. More games than ever before will be released in the next 18 months that are only available on the 'next gen consoles'. This will drive sales up.

The Xbone will have 'some' form of backwards compatibility at 'some' point.

If all his m8's have 360s get a 360 cheap, but understand this won't last more than a year or two at the very most.

Careful with the wording. The console will last as long as you look after it.

It sounds like the OP just wants something for a select number of games, which are all currently available for xbox 360. If so, the 360 is absolutely fine.

Full backward compatibility has now been confirmed in a software update for December 2015, I would get the xbox one, its pointless buying old tech and the 360 has always had reliability issues.

Thanks all, will have to give it some thought, on the one hand a 360 for quite cheap and then maybe the xbox one (by which time I presume it may fall in price) or go for the latest which will have more long term use. At the moment all his minecraft friends have the 360 but I presume some of them may upgrade as well soon. Also I note minecraft is not yet listed as one oft he games that will have backward compatability
