Domestic CCTV regulations

I've just been having a discussion about CCTV on domestic properties with a friend, and we've established that they're not covered under the DPA so we wouldn't need to display signs, release footage etc. In addition, we also found that if a CCTV captures activity on another residential premises then this could be a human rights act violation.
So the question we can't figure out is that if we put CCTV on the front of the house, pointed at the drive, but it captures the road - is this OK?
The other question from myself is that we have a public road that goes down the side of our house, parallel to our garden where we park a car. Am I allowed to mount a camera on my house, and point it at the spot on the road where my car parks?

I'm sure someone will be able to tell you the exact legislation but if it's pointing at a public road, what can anyone really do? I don't believe there'd be anything wrong with that.0
