Advice for nephew

One of my nephews has serios bowel problems. Despite various operations he is not clear of them. He might be fine for say 6 months then he has a relapse which renders him impossible to work.
About 3 months ago it has again recurred. Cannot work and is living on statory sick pay. Clearly he is building up debt and his last job is likely to have gone. This problem started about 10 years ago and has blighted his life. When he is fine no problem working but when it reoccurs he is totally unable to work.
The way i see it is that he should claim for a more permanent form of benefits. At 40 he is progressing in life and this is, in my mind, going to continue. His lady friend and i are trying to support him and we are wondering if you guys can give us some ideas to go forward. Thanks for reading.

He can't claim ESA whilst receiving SSP but might be able to claim IS as topup to his SSP. If his lady friend is working it's unlikely that he will get anything but it is worth investigating.0

What are his circumstances?
Does he live alone? How old? Partner? Children?
There may be other benefits he can claim if you give us this information.0 -
He is 40. He lives with a partner and her 18 year old lass. His partner has a low income and is, a he same time, caring for him.0
