London Visit -Oyster Card

Options
Visiting London in August for 5 days, two of which will be traveling to zone 6, the others Zone1/Zone 2. is it worth getting a travel card, £58.60 or just getting an Oyster card and using that? As far as I can see the main cost I will have will be two rtn tickets @ £13.60 each day. An thoughts/advice?

Will you be travelling at peak times or off peak? How many journeys each day?

This very recent thread may help:
  • yes will be traveling at peak times, I am not sure how many trips etc on the Underground as when I have visited before, a number of years ago, used to buy an all day ticket and jump on and off the underground. It will depend on the weather and a few other factors as to how often

Use pay as you go, it will be capped at the day travelcard price anyway and on the zone 1/2 days that is around £6. Or use Contactless payment and there is a weekly cap as well.
  • Contactless debit/credit card is the easy no-fuss way to go in London. There's no need to register, no need to top up, just wave over the terminal as you enter/leave each station. It will give you the exact same rate as an Oyster card and will apply the daily / weekly caps automatically. Just be sure to use the same card every time and physically take it out of your wallet/purse to avoid clashes with any other contactless cards in there.

If you're in London more often and want to, then it is easy to register an account on TfL's website for free and you can review / download all your past journey details on a contactless card.

    Agree totally with this.

Just to add that you need one contactless card for every traveller.

One of the reasons against oyster for occasional visitors used to be a deposit and hassle. Now one can use contactless cards life is both simpler and cheaper.

Though if you do want to register your contactless card to see what fares have been charged to it, it's very quick and easy to do so - go to...
    contactless.tfl.gov.uk
... and click on "Sign up for an account" on the right hand side of the page.

Note that the TfL website, including the contactless bit, is also designed to work well on mobile devices.

Alternatively, you can see the charges and journey history for the last seven days for a contactless card without having to register - see "7 days charge & journey history" at the bottom of that same webpage, contactless.tfl.gov.uk .
  • thank you, in that case might not bother with an oyster card, as I have a contactless card and can use that instead.....was more for the security and not looking I was a visitor that I was thinking oyster
