Trees over hanging our garden

We have a number of trees over hanging our garden from a public footpath running down the side of our house. I would guess that the local council are responsible for these trees. In my opinion these trees need prunning back.
Can anybody suggest my best course of action to get this done? Would I get any joy from contacing the council and asking for them to arrange for these trees to be pruned?

hi clive
as far as I am aware, you are within your rights to prune the branches overhaning your property, but within reason and not so that it damages the tree itself. Practically though, it is probably easiest to just call the council and ask if they can come and do it. If they refuse, they should still be able to offer you advice on what you are and aren't entitled to trim yourself.
hope this helps and that you are well

Thanks. Unfortunately these are big oak trees and I suspect will require the attention of people who know what they are doing and have the right kit to prune them which will not be cheap. They are far too tall for me to get up with any ladders I have.hi clive

I think I read some where that your allowed to cut trees that overhang but you must return the wood etc to who ever owns it to rightful owner, but I would ring council first saves the work load0

I think the procedure is that you should ask the owner to do the work first and only if they do not do so within a reasonable time should you take it upon yourself to do the work, and yes you should offer them the wood.0

They may have a tree preservation order on them ,if this is the case it is an offence to prune them so best contact the council to deal with it.
