can`t get a bank account

My son has tried almost every where to get a new bank account after NatWest closed his a couple of months ago due to him owing them £700 (mostly charges)
He is due to start an apprenticeship next week and has given them my sort code and account number but he is worried they will question this.
He went into Nationwide 2 weeks ago and explained he just wanted an account with a cash card, no overdraft, no credit. They assured him they wouldn`t do a credit check and he would get everything through soon. But he called them yesterday and they said he was turned down because of a credit check.
Any ideas, he doesn`t want it to spoil this chance he has got with his new employer.

That your son has given his new employer your bank details should not make any difference to them.
However, it sounds as if your son needs to open a Basic Bank account (see this booklet), until this issue with the Natwest is resolved/his credit rating improves.
There is a list of providers included - however, he should be clear that he is after a 'basic bank' account - otherwise they may process his application as for a normal current account, increasing the chances that he would be refused.

Hi
Halifax do a basic bank account that he should be able to get.
I have got a feeling nationwide put him forward for a full current account as they do a basic account but nationwide being the nationwide did not do as he asked.
A couple of my friends had probs wiv getting a basic bank account but in the end went to the aliance and leicester and got one no probs.
With reference to his employer paying his wages into your account that should not present any probs as you can have money paid into any account you want but I think it would be best in the future for him to have his own
Hope that helps a bit

Well it`s nice to hear all hope is not lost. Do you know if you can do apply online for any of these or do you have to go in the branch?
The booklet from the FSA was very informative, he only asked for a basic acc at Nationwide, no cheque book. he took ID aswell so they should really have let him open it i think.
A dilema for me also because i could pay Natwest what he owes them but he needs to learn to be better with money and he won`t if he thinks i`m there to bail him out will he?0 -
Hi
Yes you can do it online but they will ask for id so prob best to open it online then take id to the branch, saves time in my book.
I know all about being bailed out, my parents did it enough for me!!!:o
The only thing though is he might get a default/ccj against him and it stays with him for 6 years. However i totally agree with you on teaching him a lesson on money. I try and teach my kids now about money and they only 11 & 12 years old!!!!:rotfl:

Hi,
I had some money problems and needed an account for my new job. Couldn't open a "normal" account so had to find a basic bank account. I got accepted very easily over the phone for a cashminder co-op account (basic bank account) they give you an electron card, which is handy, you can set up DD's and standing orders but you get no facilities ie o/d or chq book. You can also use the post office to pay money in and get money out etc
Mine was opened up over the phone within 48hrs. Didn't have to go to a branch or send ID and no credit search either.
They are really friendly and helpful - best account I've ever had.
the only downside is if you were to go overdrawn 3 times in as many months they will close the account but you can do internet banking to keep an eye on things and I am now much more responsible at keeping track of what I have (or haven't!) got....Everything always works out in the end :beer:0 -
Forgot to say the co-op number is 08457 212 212, you can look on their website which is co-operativebank.co.uk - look under current accounts for detailsEverything always works out in the end :beer:0

Your son may be able to apply for some of them online, but many will still want him to come into a branch before they finally open the account. The booklet from the FSA was very informative, he only asked for a basic acc at Nationwide, no cheque book. he took ID aswell so they should really have let him open it i think.
As I say, sometimes they process it for the wrong type of account - in fact it happens with Nationwide quite a lot - so I hear.A dilema for me also because i could pay Natwest what he owes them but he needs to learn to be better with money and he won`t if he thinks i`m there to bail him out will he?
This won't help him learn his lesson but if most of the £700 is due to charges, I presume he/you will try and reclaim them? (perhaps after things have settled down a bit..)
