a lot of people in the past have mentioned this and the best advice given was to try and call at 07:30 as was the best time to get through.

No consolation I know, but even people who work for DWP have trouble getting through to Tax Credits, and even more trouble getting any information out of them.

I recently changed jobs and childcare it took over 3 weeks to get my new employers paye reference, so I was very close to the one month deadline for informing them of changes. I gave up phoning and wrote in the end. I got an updated claim letter 3 weeks later :)

I had to write to them in the end. Spent a fortune on many phonecalls, never getting through. Our new baby is 11 weeks old now but they only backdate payments for one month - I wish I could prove how long I've been trying to ring them!

In the end I got through to someone. It took 25 minutes just for him to take my basic details. I really think he was drunk or hungover or it was his first day, he was just awful. Then he told me he couldn't "add another child to our claim" and I'd have to write to them. Gah!!
