Sorry, SORN again

Hi
While I went online on 12th June 2015 to pay the vehicle tax, I inadvertently clicked the SORN, instead of 12 months. I could not cancel the SORN request online. So, I went to the local Post office and explained the situation. They checked their computer and told me that the Vehicle is not SORN and I can pay the tax. I paid £180 over the counter, they issued a receipt. and told that no longer DVLA issues tax disc.
I posted a letter to DVLA customer service on the same day requesting them to cancel the SORN. I checked the vehicle tax status online on 19th June and noticed that it was still SORN. I send a reminder to DVLA again on the same day requesting them to cancel the SORN.
I am not sure whether I can drive the car legally when it is SORN, having taxed it already. It is impossible to speak to a person on phone as the line goes dead- 'other person hung up'.
any advice on the matter will be appreciated.
Suresh

I thought you could effectively cancel the SORN online by paying for tax; did you try that? If you have a receipt, make a photocopy and keep it in the car in case of any problem. If you have paid the tax then of course you can drive; just don't lose the receipt in case ANPR cameras flag you up and DVLA start jumping up and down!
  • Thanks. I could not find an option to cancel SORN online. I shall keep copies of receipts of tax paid & letters to DVLA to cancel the SORN(posted by recorded delivery). As you said I will have to defend my corner if Camera flags up and DVLA makes it an issue. I contacted the insurance company who were non-committal. They said if I have taxed the car and have a valid MOT, I am okay to drive but will not comment on SORN issue as it is between me and DVLA!
    Thanks again.

When you tax the car it cancels the SORN.

How did you pay? If its on card then just check they have not refunded
the payment. Other than that you have proof you taxed it with the PO receipt.

I didn't think there was any way of cancelling SORN. Except by simply paying the tax....SORN is just a declaration anyway it doesn't really mean anything. It really just stops them from hassling you for the tax and insurance cover that should have been due had it been on the road.

:p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p
  • Thanks.
I paid the tax at post Office with my debit card on 12th June and they issued a receipt. The cash is not refunded to my account. It was my understanding as well that when tax is paid, the SORN is cancelled.
When I checked the DVLA site today, it still shows the car has MOT and SORN in place, nothing about tax paid.
I will await any reply from DVLA to my letters.
  • Good news.
Managed to speak to a clerk at DVLA just now. She checked the vehicle details and told me that I can drive the car. The SORN will be removed in 4 to 6 weeks from DVLA vehicle tax verification site.
As suggested by others, she also advised me to keep a copy of the tax payment receipt in the car.
    Thanks again to all.
  • Can anyone answer this one:

I moved abroad to work last August 2014 and I wrote to the DVLA to confirm this informing them that my car would be left in a garage at my mothers farm (off road basically) and requested a SORN for the car. I changed my car insurance from fully comprehensive to Fire and Theft as well. I went abroad without having received anything from the DVLA; although with moving abroad and all that entails this was not something I really took note of until I was abroad. When I tried to complete the SORN on-line I was unable to as the 16 digit number I had, it kept saying it was invalid and was being used either too early or it was out of date - I was using the DVLA Beta website for this; I kept trying again, on and off, with the same results. Until, finally, on 10 February 2015 it accepted the numbers and completed the SORN.
I had planned coming to the UK this summer and have had my car insurance changed to fully comprehensive for the period and have bought a 6 month tax disc.
However, I've just come back now to see family and friends and have discovered that the DVLA are stating that on 6 February 2015 the car was not insured - fine of £100; there are then 3 letters I have been given from the people living where I used to in the UK - one stating the fine was unpaid and had gone to court to claim that and additional costs, the second a request to attend court regarding the matter and a third letter stating I have failed to do anything about the fine etc and the bill is now £330 and there could be a warrant for my arrest to re-attend court unless I pay the bill.
I have spoken to the court and explained I live abroad and was abroad when these letters were sent and they have put the matter on hold and told me to contact the DVLA.
I emailed the DVLA and they have just sent a stock reply stating the matter is with the court and they cannot get involved.

Has anyone ever experienced this situation before and or do you have any advice for me of how to tackle this matter? Has anyone else had issues with the online process of completing a SORN?

This is the third time you have posted this please stop spamming threads with the same post.
  • But can you answer anything to this? No one is answering - does that mean they don't know or what?
I am only looking for help here.
