You don't need to provide certification for minor alterations such as adding a socket or changing face plates

While it annoys me as a tradesman that there are cowboys out there I would suggest just moving on from this experience rather than letting it beat you down . Learn from your experiences and employ specialist trades for each task rather than handymen

andyhop you are right - I should just let it go and put it down to experience. I just feel so blown away by such dishonesty and greed by this man......Maybe I have led a sheltered life but i have never known anybody so dishonest and greedy. That he can do it to a woman on her own just bewilders me.

    Karma....what goes around comes around......

    Thank you again...

You're not the only one worried. I have pretty much renovated the house I moved to fairly recently and that included replastering throughout. Come the first full summer here and the light coming through at that level is showing up clearly that the plasterer I used had a very variable standard and some of my replastered walls need replastering:mad:. I'm a woman on my own too.

I've been noting down comments by Furts and decided I don't see why I should put up with extra disruption because of Bodger Plasterer - but next time I choose to redecorate anyway of myself then I am wondering whether a combination of using that type of paint Furts mentions and using a paint roller (with the sort of "orange peel" type effect they produce), rather than the paintbrushes Bodger Plasterer used in his subsequent decoration of my house, might do the trick and give me normal-looking walls.

The thing is too that Bodger Plasterer told me he is good - and I honestly think he believes his own lie about that. I think he has led a very sheltered life myself and not seen what standards are normally expected....

Contact trading standards and let them use the door step selling regs to bring him to task.
Im assuming you didnt get any paperwork from him regarding your 14 day cooling off period ? This is a legal requirement for any trades coming to your house to do work over £42

    https://www.gov.uk/doorstep-selling-regulations

This is the law that trading standards use to send rogue traders to prison !!

We've just had our utility room skimmed (ceiling and walls). The finish is totally unblemished and feels like marble to the touch.

I am so sorry for what has happened to you. Isnt it awful though that you have to use a stipple roller to go over newly plastered walls. Its such a shame...as you had somuch done could you not do what al69 suggests.....although i know it is just added stress......

With mine, i know it just needs a good sanding down and a bit of a fill in here and there but yours sounds worse.....i am also furious that he has made himself unreachable to me and i cannot get hold of him.......that he took my money and didnt come back to complete the work and lied about what he would do when he priced the work....

Could you possibly contact the plasterer and talk to him......there must be something you can do and you shouldnt have to resort to using a stipple roller.......is it bumpy or is there indents.....could it be made good with a good sanding down and a little bit of filling (althou we absolutely shouldnt have to do this and dust will get everywere)....then maybe use the paints that furts suggested?

Let us know how you get on whatever you decide to do and good luck...

Al69 - can i ask you please - what does doorstep selling actually mean......i know that i should drop this concerning the dishonest plasterer however, there will never be any justice whilst people like this are allowed to get away with such things and look at poor moneystooshortomention.....

I 100% would contact trading standards about this man if i thought that i could......i have looked at the website nd certainly he didnt do anything professionally - no receipt - no note of contract........however, he didnt knock at my door.....and i assume this is what doorstep selling is.....

I interview the public with my work and a man i dont know gave me the number of a plasterer that i put aside for about a year.....so i rang this chap and he came to my house....said he could do it the following week......i was very unwell at the time and left him a message asking him to leave it for a few weeks but he called me saying i can do it next tuesday........said he didnt get my voice mail (he wanted to squeeze this little cash in hand job in for spending money on his holiday that he was going on the next day.....told me that is what it was for)...

Looking at the web site about doorstep selling.........i had no address for him.....i had to visit his old address that was on his calling card given for referrals (are you joking!!!) to ask for his new address (i have written and nothing - he doesnt even seem deterred by the threat of a small claims court but i am not wasting any more of my money on him)......

so no address - no receipt - no guarantee.....no contract of work.........absolutely nothing.....just take the cash and run.....

would this come under the doorstep selling thing at all????
is there any way i can take him to trading standards please....he has not returned to finish work for which i have already paid him.....and he will not address the issues with the work that he has done......indeed he has made himself unreachable......

Thank you very much....i will do it for all the women on their own being ripped off.......

    That means jack

If it feels like marble its been over polished, try getting paint to stick!

You need natural sun light to show ripples and dips in the plaster, a good job isn't about how it feels
