Friend bought 4 tyres and alloys online which they clearly state will definitely fit his car. After fitting, he drove about a mile and found his wheel arches scraping and damaged.. Has asked them to take them back. They say they won't refund him. Now he has damage to his car, can't get to work and landed with a repair bill. Help?

Did he inform his insurance company that he has made a modifcation to his car ( I assume they wheels are not standerd as they dont fit) before going on the road

the reason I ask is because, his policy may be void

as far as returning the wheels if he bought them on ebay then he could put in a claim to paypal as miss selling/described

To my mind, depends on the wording.

There is a big difference between "will fit" (more likely "suitable for") and "Fit with no modifications to bodywork"

My Other Car is one where some owners fit different wheels & tyres, and expect to have to modify the bodywork, as to them "fit" means "physically go on and bolt up".

There are a few forum threads where people specifically ask what will go on without bodywork modifications.

If they were actually advertised as suitable fitment without modifications to existing bodywork, then he has a case, otherwise I'm afraid it was up to him to make sure there wouldn't be a problem before driving it.

Not ebay - a motoring website.

From an individual or a business? You need to tell us all the pertinent details if anybody is to help you.

There's also the question of wheel spacers and whether the car had been lowered.

Not informing an insurance company of any modification can not void the policy.
It might mean that the insurers won't pay out to the policyholder following an accident or other claim but irrespective of what was done to the car, they can't legally refuse to pay out to any third party that has a valid claim.

Yep, but the op's mate still loses out as He wont get paid.

So if he is driving an expensive car is it really worth it for him not to declare them to his insurance company for a slight rise in premium, fairly risky

If he gets caught speeding he may be prosecuted.

 I thought the OP was asking for advice on wheels and tyres, not insurance.

The wheels and tyres did fit, your friend didnt roll or flare the arches to get the required clearance though.

Why didnt he check for clearance before driving it?

Why canbt he drive to work anymore? Refit the old tyres?
