Are you saving your emails to a local PST file? (In Outlook go to Tools | Account Settings | Data Files ... the PST file will be listed here, and tell you where it is).

If yes, simply copy that PST file to an external drive, then once the new HDD is sorted copy it back to the relevant folder. Then you simply Add that file back in Outlook (same menu place) and make it your Default.

But ... is this an additional HDD you're putting in, or replacing the existing one? If replacing, what about installing Windows and all your programmes?

i assume you are using POP3 rather than IMAP ?

if you are using IMAP, then you wont need to back up the emails as they will be stored on the server.

in Outlook, you draw emails from outlook into a folder, then drag them back into the indox on the new computer.

otherwise you could just use outlook to backup everything into a pst file.

you will need to pu these somewhere other than My Documents however, as that will also be wiped when you wipe the hard drive.

if you have a usb flash drive you could use that, or upload it to one of the cloud drives like google, onedrive, dropbox, etc
