I am using my mother-in-law´s PC and all of a sudden both the DVD ROM and the other CD writer have stopped working. They are both detected by the PC but there is a problem according to the hardware tool in the control panel/system menu - see image - click to enlarge

Can anyone suggest what I need to do. I have tried the update and activate options without success.

They've been disabled hence the X. If there was a problem there's be a yellow exclamation mark. Try right clicking on each and selecting "Enable".
Did you install any software when on the PC? Sometimes some copy protection software can screw up optical drive access.0 -
Yes I tried that without success. I dread to say it but a rebuild may be required...0
