Will XBOX live subscription work on 360?

Hi, picked up an XBOX controller, headset & 3 months subscription to XBOX LIVE for £5.99, it also states that this can be used to extend existing accounts. However, before I open the packaging, does anyone know whether my son could use this to extend his XBOX 360 subscription?

how do you pay for your sons current subscription? is it credit/debit card for the year or have you pre paid by buying a card?

I used the 30 day freebie we had when we first purchased the console, however, due to the 3 flashing red lights, I am now waiting for my THIRD console, and until I am confident that this one will work for longer than a few months, don't want to splash out £40 for a years subscription!

If you send your xbox 360 back to microsoft for repair due to the 3 red lights and you have a gold live subscription they will give you a 30 day gold card on return to replace the time you have been unable to use the service...
