    As a non-techno - is it as easy as pull out the 4 wires from sockets on the back of the PlusNet Router and push those wires back in again to the back of a new router? (ie no other fancy fiddling round).
    Physically yes. However once you have connected the wires you will need to use a computer connected to it and log onto the router setup pages to enter the correct settings and log in details for your internet account.
  • Thanks.

    Non-techno as I am then = I've just translated that into = will have to get my computer man in again.

    So - once I have the rest of my income back - then I'll call him and tell him to bring a new router with him and that I'm wondering about that BT one that a poster here mentioned as being the specific one I might like.

    Just thought I'd add my piece here;

    I'm with PlusNet, excellent customer service but rubbish routers, I've been through two.

    I was with Sky before PlusNet and O2 before Sky, they all sent me routers, Sky's router was excellent, was able to work wirelessly (as was O2's) and was faster than any other router I'd tried (same phoneline/BB line so am doubtful it was a special phone line, we don't get Fiber in my area).

    I cannot get a wireless connection with PlusNet's router, I've tried but despite being less than 2 meters away from the computer tower it will not connect wirelessly, (past routers I will add were further away).

    I have a working phone line and had the BT people out to fix me on to a different connection at the interchange (or something like that) but it only made the wired connection more reliable, didn't mean the box suddenly worked wirelessly.

    I've looked at other routers but the decent ones seem to start at £30 and climb rapidly to £hundreds. Not in my budget, so sadly I now have to live with cables running across my floor and am unable to close doors due to the cables. It just goes to say that despite this, due to the poor customer service I had over the years from Talktalk, that Sky charge me for not being able to afford a TV, that O2 went out of business and all the other competitors seem far greater in price, I wont be moving from PlusNet any time soon. Just wish they'd supply decent routers.

    I too am with Plusnet and have had issues with previous ISPs routers. I bought a second hand Draytek 2820 from ebay and you go for around 35 to 50 depending on spec and a lucky bid. I have used quite a few of these. These are business class routers, and a normally rock solid with decent wifi. However I installed one of these in a HMO, the tenants loved it due to its wifi strength and it never needed to be rebooted, however there was one who's PC would not connect, and the ssid would not even show up, her mobile was fine, just that PC, and so that nasty thompson had to be reinstalled. Possibly a wifi driver thing i suspect.

    If you must have cables not WiFi then try some powerplugs.

    There's no chance you've still got your old Sky or O2 router around somewhere? If so, just swap it out.

    I must be missing something here - if your pooter is less than two metres from the router, why do you have cables running across the floor?

    Has anyone tried a factory reset on your router?

    You would still need to be absolutely certain you had your username and password as you would need to enter them into the software on the router when you reset it. To my mind this would be a last step before buying a new router.

    I would suggest for this step that you get a techie friend to help you. If you make an error you would most likely be without internet until the router was replaced.

    As for those without wireless, you should be able to add on a wireless access point.
