Opinions wanted on Laptop CPUs

I've been ignoring laptops as a serious choice for computing for years, um, no longer ... anyway, prob is I know next to nothing about which cpu's are most recommended in the 'scene'. In the old days, I used to be all AMD in my desktops so when I think about a hot-running AMD processor in such a thin case, it doesn't give me happy thoughts.
So basically, this is a call to all the insiders to let me in on the debate - which cpu's are considered the best choice? Let's say for multimedia enthusiasts, not for gamers. Is AMD to be recommended in laptops or should I go with Intel? Is it better to look out for the laptop specific cpu's like Turion (AMD) and Centrino (Intel)? Are the 'ordinary' desktop processors any good in laptops? Can laptops overheat and how can one prevent that?
Sorry about the many questions; I'd be equally happy about a link where I could read up on this, preferably simplified for laypersons so that I don't have to work myself through hours of geek talk

I'm by no means an expert but I believe at the moment it's all about Intel and that the AMD processors are a bit disappointing at the moment.

Yup - Core 2 Duo is the flavour of the moment.0

Core Duo or Core 2 Duo's are very good chips although expensive.
If you can't afford one, I'd possibly prefer a Turion over a Pentium. Turions don't run too hot, I'm currently using one now. They're generally very good, although not as cool nor as powerful as my Core 2 Duo laptop. I got my Turion laptop for £280 though so can't complain."Boonowa tweepi, ha, ha."0 -
Toms Hardware have some mobile CPU charts. The Core 2 Duo dominates the performance charts. The Turion does better on the price\performance chart, if the lower performance is acceptable.0
