AVG Free + Outlook 2000... any suggestions?

Hi everyone,

Just got rid of Norton, installed AVG Free (plus Spybot Search & Destroy & already have Ad-Aware). Everything up to date. Am virus free and have been for years.

On installing AVG I immediately noticed that my machine is running much faster than with Norton. :)

Yesterday was my full day of running my PC with AVG - no problem, except occasionally IE was slow. Running CCleaner then made IE run fast and prob sorted.

Today, I notice that Outlook is not funtioning properly. It takes a while to open, and navigation from inbox, to calandar, to outlook is very very slow and stilted. Even just clicking through messages in my inbox is sooo slow.

I have come to the conclusion that AVG Free (version 7.5.476) is reactiing somehow with Outlook 2000 and assume I am going to have to disable the email scanner option.

Has anyone else had this problem and is there an alternative to disabling the email scanner?

Cheers.

The problem went from bad to worse and Outlook ended up hanging - had to close it down through Windows Task Manager.

Have disabled email scanning and now have control of Outlook again. Looks like I am going to have to keep it disabled to be able to use Outlook.

Anyone else experiencing this or do you have another solution? Thanks.

  • Hi there,

I use Outlook 2003 and have experienced similar issues. Tis a bit of a strange one as it doesnt happen all the time (v annoying when it does though!).

Am loathed to turn off the email scanner just in case something slips through but havent found any suitable solutions as of yet, will let you know if i do!!!

Can't really help because I never had any issue with AVG and Outlook 2003 (and I now don't use AVG at all) so I'm not sure what's happening here. Might be worth uninstalling AVG and then reinstalling it.

Cheers swvillafan, as least I know it's not just me and I'm not going mad! :rotfl:

I have kept email scanning disabled and everything's now working fine. As long as I drag any trusted attachments to the desktop before opening, I should be okay for now (fingers crossed!).

Thanks superscaper, resinstalling's a good idea. Although I will soon be buying a new PC soon, so I might just limp on as I am at the moment.

Well if you still have problems you could try Avast instead, I've never had problems installing that either on different pcs.

I myself use NOD32 and others would probably suggest the same or kaspersky/steganos if you want to go for paid AV rather than a free one.

    Thanks superscraper,

Just done a google search and NOD32 looks very interesting. Is it really that fast compared to others? AVG took 1.5 hours to scan my drives - and they're not that big! (Norton took a while too, can't remember how long).

I'm happy to pay for AV software. What I don't like is being locked into the subscription process, i.e. they (Norton et el) deduct from your credit card every year without advanced notice/permission (there were some recent articles on the web on this).

Re: kaspersky/steganos, I've got full programs on PC cover disks although I've never installed them. Perhaps now's the time, although they're probably a bit out of date (talking 2005 and 2006).

Thanks for the info, I will do some more research into NOD32.

  • hi lads and lasses. i use to use AVG a few years ago. and its good.

    but AVG is much better.

    http://www.free-av.com/

got a toolkit built in email joke app finder. just find it more steady than AVG and updates more regular.
