Car Insurance Re-newal

Hello all,

Avid reader of MSE but rarely post if at all however I have a question which I cannot seem to find the answer 2.

A month ago I did a car insurance quote on Gocompare which came out £497 with Elephant, however my insurance isn't due until 4th August. I've jut done another quote with exactly the same details however the quote has increased to £511 (another insurer).

I put in the quote for 30 days time each time does anybody have an idea as to why it will have gone up?

Also Admiral/Elephant are no longer on the list with the second quote which confuses me even more as they have consistently been high on the list each time I have done the quote.

Any help is appreciated.

Prices are fluid and can change on a daily basis.

    Thank you for the respoinse,

What sort of things influence these prices?

I find car insurance to still be somewhat of a scam, I added a parent on a named driver & did a quote not realising they had points. The quote with points worked out cheaper than without. It makes no sense.

All the usual underwriting things but what makes changes faster is technology. Comparison sites and competition where just a few pounds could see you move up/down a few places. Market share data (does the provider want to buy market share at that moment or increase profitability).

Parent is older and 3 points often makes little or no difference as its so easy to get 3 points. Also, means that the vehicle will be partly used by a more experienced driver some of the time compared to a less experienced driver all of the time.

It's also possible you've triggered an anti-fraud block - they generally don't like you to play around with quotes, particularly things like trying a quote with and without points for someone. Try another computer if possible (or see if you have an email with the original quote reference and give them a call)

I stopped playing with the comparison sites, I now do a quote about 2 weeks before its due and haggle with the top 2, then join a forum for your make or model of car and see who they use and see if they can beat your price.

Just being a member of the forum maybe enough to qualify. My sister even changed her make of car and still gets a good deal.
