First House - Energy Bills

Hello all!

I'm looking into energy bills for my new flat. As this is my first non-student house I'm struggling to find a quote without any information on my previous bills.

I did a quick estimate on uSwitch, and it quoted £2400 per year for duel fuel. We have 4 people, with an electric cooker and gas (I think) boiler. This seems a little high judging by what I've paid previously, which from what I remember was around £1600, but it's hard to say as we've always been on pay as you go.

The other issue I'm having is all the cheapest suppliers seem to have terrible reviews online, then again, who goes online to say nice things about their energy provider?!

I'd really appreciate some advice on this. While we're not set to move in until the 1st, I'm trying to be organised and get everything sorted before we move in (although I'm starting to think it would be a better idea to wait until I'm actually there.)

Many thanks,
Blindmelon7

Initially you have no option but to use the energy company(s) supplying your house - you are on a legally binding deemed contract - and this will be their most expensive tariff - i.e. Standard tariff.

However you can instigate switching to another company straight away.

How much your gas/electricity will use is an 'How long is a piece of string' question. There are far too many unknown factors.

Go to a comparison website like www.energyhelpline.com and enter various kWh amounts and a pattern will emerge.

Don't forget to check meter readings(and water) on the day you move in and notify energy company.

It is also possible that the existing company might have a cheap and competitive tariff which you can switch to straight away.
