Neighbours weedkiller

New neighbours have just moved in next door they were spraying the weeds and I have to say I was impressed they were dying within 24 hrs. We got chatting only to find out he is using a caustic soda solution .

He offered to do the same in my garden but when I said no as it would be harmful to our dog he seemed surprised !!!!!

Well he's the ignorant one then...

Fancy being so thick that you don't even apparently realise that lots of people don't use weedkiller (even if you personally do).

Not that caustic soda in particular would be likely to do your dog any favours.

Well...you've had advance warning he's about as thick as two short planks and it would be as well to be on the alert as to what else he might go in for (in apparent unawareness that lots of other people don't function the same way and/or its just plain obviously not safe).

It's more than a little worrying to find just how many people aren't the worlds brightest....remembers comment from my father many years back (and he was in a position in his job that he ought to know) to the effect of "You'd be surprised just how many people aren't very bright....". Belated admission = he was right....darn it...

Sounds dangerous; there was a thread a few years back: https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/3731989

And I read elsewhere that the Dow Chemicals website says of caustic soda that, "If spilt on soil the soil must be removed". That's what I call dangerous! It doesn't mention dogs.

And many do, I do . Anything that makes gardening easier and more enjoyable , has my vote.
Neighbour is wrong, but using weed killer isn't.

If you spill dogs, probably best to remove them as well. ;)
  • Well...actually...I cant even think where the neighbour concerned got the idea of using caustic soda from.

I don't use weedkillers personally. Now - other things I've read of (which I might or might not consider a good idea) boil down to:

    - putting in the effort to remove the weeds (ie pulling them up)
    - flameguns
    - boiling water on them

I do nos 1 and 3 of that list personally.

Other ideas I've read include things like salt, vinegar, etc. - which I wouldn't use.

But I've never ever read that caustic soda idea anywhere.

I'm not surprised. Caustic soda will kill most things, including people.

I'm not convinced it's entirely legal either.
