Restricting Access To My Credit Report

Hi

Is it possible to restrict access or have some form of authorisation for any company trying to view my credit report? I've just checked mine and the same company have credit checked me 61 times between december and may, without my authority. Or if they do have authroity, its via some cleverly worded clause from years ago. I seem to remember being told there was a validation system where the credit agency either emailed or text you whenever someone tried to run a credit check to verify that you had authorised this... Am I making this up, or does such a system exist?

Yes, I think there is some device such as you describe, but as I recall it is for use in so-called "identity theft" cases.

However, if the CRAs do allow you to place such a restriction on their files, it might raise questions with potential lenders.

Also, no one actually needs your permission to hit you with a credit check. The lie that they do is put about by the CRAs themselves. Check this out with the ICO.

The 61 checks you refer to could well be as a result of your use of comparison websites. Tip: always use bogus identity information on a comparison site in the first instance. Only when you're ready to buy the product should you enter the genuine stuff.
  • Thanks, thats interesting regards not requiring permission... The 61 checks were from Robinson Way - unless they've bought an account from someone else, I don't have any debts with them...

Consent is given when applying for credit or you understand that one or more CRAs will be searched as part of your application. You don't have to give that consent but in that case you're not going to get much credit if at all. If you think that a search has been done without your consent then complain to the CRA who can remove the search entry on your credit report.

Not all searches are credit related. Some are for fraud prevention, ID or location searches.

When an account, usually a debt, is sold everything is moved to the new owner including all your agreements associated with that account.

Have you ever used an Insurance Comparison website at all?

I've noticed (on Noddle) one or two companies listed on there have searched my files from time to time.

It is written in the Terms somewhere when you sign up.
It's not your credit score that counts, it's your credit history. Any replies are my own personal opinion and not a representation of my employer.

Companies can carry out a credit search against you without any consent whatsoever.
  • Thanks guys, appreciate the replies. Backstory, I'm in a trust deed so have a fair bit of debt that may or may not be getting moved about. I don't get mail relating to the accounts any more - equally, I havent looked at my credit report in months, hence only picking up o this just now. I don't have anything with Robinson Way otherwise I would have guessed they might be trying to check up on me to see if I'd taken out other credit so they could maybe challenge the trust deed? Who knows... I just felt 61 checks in five months was a bit excessive!
