These replies are making me laugh! Thanks all for your advice.
I've ordered my boxes and have started packing up some bits i know I won't need. We were originally hoping for a move date in August but our vendors have just dropped a bombshell meaning it will be mid/late oct. Husband is now moaning at me for getting carried away with the packing! Alright for him to say, he barely does any of it!0 -
We get our keys tomorrow, we started boxing a couple weeks ago. Finished the sheds on the weekend. Still got my daughter's room to go and finish kitchen and main bedroom. Yet I have ssuddenly gone on a go slow, need to umph to finish off. :eek:0

Have a different coloured bags. Trash in black bag... Normal assumption.
Have a zone that all your important things are in. Do not pack passports, paperwork or any vital thing till the very end. Ideally lock in a boot of a car or somewhere with family.
Number the boxes or colour code. Winter goods and granny's dishes don't need as urgent priority compared to kids toys. You will be tired and opening all the boxes straight away is not ideal.
Kitchen ware. Wrap knives carefully. Open bottles, consider tossing if the seals are poor. Eat down the freezer. It's terrible to move frozen food.
Have picnic set of dishes and plates, knives and forks. Some times it's impossible to find the box with x z or z. Feeding the hungry improves patience and their work rate. Have essentials like bulbs, loo roll and screwdriver to hand.
The cost of transport can sometimes make it cheaper to toss out and replace if travelling long distances. I tossed old mops and brooms.
It may be worthwhile collecting loads of free papers or thick Sunday's papers. Cups seem to multiply and each need wrapping.
Cable ties are your best friend, legs of ironing board, keeps doors shut, keeps clothes airs tidy and easy to carry. I used plastic bags cabled tied to items to keep screws or lose pieces together.
Moving is like a law of physics. It expands to fill the time available. I've tried being organised and starting early and last minute, it makes no difference it will all get done. But if you start early sometimes you can get caught up with nostalgia, a bit of a deadline is good0 -
On moving day itself - pack a suitcase with toiletries, PJ's and a set of clean clothes and any essential medication. Keep that seperate from everything else. Then when you are finally ready to fall in bed on moving day at least you'll know where to find a clean set of clothes and a toothbrush0

Oh I am not looking forward to this day at all. The boyfriend doesn't want pro removers in, not even a man and van, to save money. Personally I swore I would NEVER move my own stuff ever again, after moving once every one, sometimes two years since the age of 18 - now 33. Looks like I am going to have to face it again. I've half joked that I'm going to go to the new house and sit there and wait for him while he moves everything. You see he also wants his parents down to help. They are lovely people, but I know I will get a bit grumpy sometimes and having random people around me will not help.
We have two flights of stairs to go down. No proper parking outside, lucky to get a space in the road.
To top it all off, we live in a flat that is fully furnished. We do own a few items of furniture. Trying to explain to anyone helping which items need to go and which do not..... it's the one reason I have agreed not to get professional movers! What a pain in the bum.
On the other hand.... very little furniture means no serious lifting, no appliances, no sofa, no bed, no wardrobes. So I should really stop moaning and count my blessings!!0
