Mobile phone in USA

We are going away to USA and we want to be contactable as we travel around. I am thinking about buying a PAYG SIM card in USA and put it in my mobile phone. Otherwise receiving calls on my UK mobile will cost me a fortune!!
Will it work and has anyone done this? Any idea of the cost or whether the USA SIMs will go into the UK phone?
Any suggestions please?

Yes it will work, as long as you have a tri band / quad band phone..
You have a choice of a couple of providers
T-Mobile USA
AT&T
i'm currently with T-Mobile USA for my sim, and for incoming calls, it is cheap, but outoing to the UK it is expensive, and i think AT&T wins out.
You could buy the sim before you go, speak to some ebay sellers, and get one to ship to the UK..
Hope that Helps0 -
Got one last year from ebay , think less than a tenner, with $30 dollar credit
was T Mobile so same cost whicher state ( well 48 )
remember you pay for incoming calls
A lot of Uk packages include fee calls to US mobiles... although you can get a 0844 divert ( they pay 2p pm to call you )Any posts on here are for information and discussion purposes only and shouldn't be seen as (financial) advice.0 -
7-Eleven Speakout is a good option (as mentioned earlier this week in a very similar thread!)

Sorry - Do I have to pay for incomming calls? If this was a USA registered number and I am using it in USA, do I still have to pay for incomming calls? I didn't think I have to??
What I am I missing?0 -
Yes - you have to pay for incoming calls and texts even though it is a U.S registered phone number - even if someone with a U.S number calls you or sends you a text.
Just the way they do it over there I'm afraid.0 -

Thanks for the reply. Do you know roughly what I am expected to pay (per min) for incomming calls please?0 -
20 cents is about normal, as I said the T mobile card I got had $30 credit on it for either in or out callsAny posts on here are for information and discussion purposes only and shouldn't be seen as (financial) advice.0

Its because they use the same numbering system for landlines and "cellphones".. so a US caller pays the same ( often free) but if t terminates at a mobile the receiver pays the different .. unlike in IK where the caller pays more to call itAny posts on here are for information and discussion purposes only and shouldn't be seen as (financial) advice.0
