Car NCD

Just a query really - I've not had an insurance claim on a car in over 20 years (fingers crossed!!) But i'm due to renew later this month & I notice that my current insurer has got 70pct NCD = 5 years!!
How do I prove I've got much longer than that as I generally change insurers every year.
I have noticed in the past when using internet sites that the max they do is 12+ years but some sites are now going up to 20 years & obviously if it affects the cost of the insurance I want to be able to claim the max possible.

Traditionally NCD benefits went up to 5 years and so anything over 5 years was pointless. Where I cut my teeth in insurance they had an ancient mainframe system behind the scenes, as many do, and the NCD field there was only a single digit (ie 0-9) so had no way of recording anything above 9. You then had lazy call centre ops who'd type 5 for anything that is >4 and so letters were produced saying "5 or more years" to avoid all the calls when it comes through wrong.

You generally have two options, either (1) contact your current insurer and most will check what you provided them in terms of proof of NCD and confirm its that + 1 year or (2) keep the last proof of NCD that showed you with XX years and then send it and the intermediary years showing no other claims.

1 may not be an option with some insurers where proof of NCD isnt sort at the point of purchase.

Thank you very much - I have found my last insurance docs where it states 9 years so theoretically I have 10 years for this year! I'll see what happens when I actually renew.
